Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth played a show at St. David’s Episcopal Church on 8th Street in Austin on this blustery Saturday night, February 11, 2012. The Impaler had every intention of making it to the church on time for the show, and hightailed it over there right after Honeycreeper’s set at Headhunters… but arrived just as the backline was being lifted into the back of the van.
Thurston was hanging out as I approached, and quickly confirmed that the show was over. I told him I was at another show and thought I’d make it. He chuckled and said, ‘well, that’s Austin… too many shows in one night to make it to all of them.’ Too true. We chatted for a bit, and he’s every bit as cool and gracious as I would’ve expected. I may have missed the set (dammit!) but at least I got to spend a few minutes talking about music with a true legend, and I got this cool photo out of the deal. That’s Austin indeed.
